NAAM IS AMRIT
By Sri Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath

If a person remembers Narayana in the morning, at noon and at night, his sins are immediately destroyed and he attains Narayana.

Whilst having a bath or doing any work, if one meditates on Narayana, he does expiation for all his sins.

Q. You have said that if one meditates on Narayana every day after his bath, then all his sins are destroyed. Why do you refer to meditation only after doing bath?

A. A bath cools down the body. When ‘Vyana’, which moves to all parts of the body is cooled, all the associates i.e. ‘Apana’, ‘Samana’, ‘Prana’ and ‘Udana’ are also cooled. When ‘Prana’ is stilled, mind too is stilled. So meditation is best done after bath. In the olden days, the Rishis used to bathe thrice a day and meditate on their ancestors. The Shastras have prescribed for the ‘Sadhakas’ three baths a day i.e. in the morning and evening and at noon. These days it is not always possible to have three baths.

One should have at least one bath a day and the body should be rinsed with a wet towel twice a day before sitting for ‘Puja’ and ‘Sandhya’. If one does ‘Sadhana’ at proper times, one can get the result quickly.

Q. What do you mean by ‘Sadhana’ at proper times?

A. I have told you earlier that morning, noon, evening and midnight, these four are the best times for ‘Sadhana’. ‘Prana’ at that time goes by itself towards the ‘Sushumna’, and gets automatically stilled. At that time God appears in the temple of the heart. Those who are earnest about seeing God, must take care to do ‘Japa’ and ‘Dhyana’ at these four occasions every day.

Q. If one sits up at midnight, how can he get up early in the morning?

A. At the beginning, the ‘Sadhaka’ should try to do ‘Japa’ and ‘Dhyana’ for at least an hour three times a day i.e. early in the morning, at noon and in the evening. Later as his ‘Sattwa Guna’ increases, he will require less hours for sleep. Then even if he sits up at midnight, he will be able to get up early in the morning.

Q. Does ‘Dhyana’ come if one goes on chanting ‘Naam’?

A. Yes; ‘Naam’, when it arrives at the ‘Madhyama’, is transformed into ‘Dhyana’.

Q. Will you tell me more about ‘Prana’?

A. There is a saying that without ‘Kanu’ (Kanhaiya), there is no song. Similarly, there is nothing beside the ‘Prana’. In whatever way one worships 'Bhagwan Prana', he gets him in that way. If one follows the lines of the Rik Veda to worship ‘Prana’ which uplifts everything, he gets ‘Salokya’ and ‘Sayujya’ with ‘Prana’ as laid down in that Veda. But if one worships ‘Prana’, which brings different things together, according to ‘Yajuh’, he gains ‘Salokya’ or ‘Sayujya’ with ‘Prana’ in the form of ‘Yajuh’. On the other hand if one worships ‘Prana’ which gives greatness, according to the ‘Sama’, then one gets ‘Salokya’ or ‘Sayujya’ with ‘Prana’ in the form of the ‘Sama’. If one worships ‘Prana’ as the ‘Kshatra’, because he cures the body of ‘Kshatas’ (wounds), he gets ‘Salokya’ or ‘Sayujya’ with ‘Prana’ in the form of ‘Kshatra’.

Q. What happens if one worships ‘Prana’ taking him to be Bhagwan ?

A. Then he gets Sri Bhagwan Himself. His name is the ‘wish-tree’; whatever one wishes one gets from Him.

Q. What is the best thing to be wished for?

A. To have face to face ‘Darshan’. One should keep this desire forever alive in one’s heart. His thirst for direct ‘Darshan’ should not be quenched by one ‘Darshan’ only. “By doing work as laid down by Him, I shall see Him again” — this thought should be kept alive in the heart. For a ‘Jnani’ or an ‘Intellectual’, direct vision depends on the extent of his attainment. But for a ‘Bhakta’, his only craving is for ‘Darshan’. He does not ask for anything except ‘Darshan’.

Since my birth, I have been seeing that form. But my eyes are not yet satisfied; I have kept Him in my heart for millions of years. But my heart is not yet cooled.

Q. Even after direct ‘Darshan’, does one’s thirst for further ‘Darshan’ linger on?

A. So long as one’s eyes can see, one’s thirst for ‘Darshan’ will not cease. The Bhakta says – “So long as I live, my eyes will see your ‘Rupa’ (form)”.

Q. Is it possible to have direct ‘Darshan’ continuously?

A. By direct vision, the body becomes still. Then the ‘Bhakta’ lives with the thought that ‘Whatever is and whatever I see or hear is Yourself’. He sees Bhagwan in every material object.

Q. Is it possible to have direct vision by these plain eyes? I have probably asked this question several times earlier, but I am asking again -“Is it possible to see that ethereal, ‘Sat-Chit-Ananda’ Bhagwan by these mortal eyes?”.

A. Yes, it is possible. One can see Him because He appears on His own volition. You and I are talking here; that ethereal Bhagwan is standing in front of us and he is hearing our conversation. If He desires, He can make Himself visible to us at this very place.

Q. How will His desire come? What do I have to do to kindle His desire?

A. He only knows how that desire is kindled in Him. There need not be any reason for His ‘Kripa’. He is ‘Kripamaya’ (full of kindness) without any reason.

The Self cannot be attained through exposition, nor through intellectual power, nor even through vast learning. He whom alone this (Self) accepts, by him He is to be attained. To him the Self-reveals His own true nature i.e. His Sat-Chit-Ananda ethereal body.

Q. Is there then no way of attaining Him?

A. Of course there is. He Himself told Arjuna —

Think of me, be attached to me, be my ‘Bhakta’, do ‘Puja’ to me, do ‘Pranam’ (Namaskar) to me, you will certainly attain me. You are dear to me; I promise this to you.

Q. The mind–monkey is jumping constantly from one branch to another. It is impossible to pre–determine its line of flight. How can I constantly think of Him with such a run–away mind?

A. It is the habit of mind to plan and un-plan. If you think of God’s ‘Leela’, then your mind will stay with God. If you cannot do that, then practice the nine types of Bhakti – i.e. Hearing, Singing, Thinking, Massaging, Worshipping, Praising, Serving, Befriending or Offering oneself to Him. If you cannot do it then do only worship and practise charity. If that is also beyond you, then only do ‘Namaskar’ to Him. Always do ‘Pranam’ to Him; in that case, whatever you may be, whatever may be the amount of filth that you have acquired, you will get Him, you surely will get Him. He shall appear before you — He certainly shall appear.

Q. Shall I get His ‘Darshan’ simply by doing ‘Pranam’?

A. The ‘Bhakta’ should do ‘Pranam’ for thousands, millions or billions of time. By the sacrifice of one’s own self, through ‘Namaskar’, all Gods can be pleased.

Hence the word ‘Nama’ removes all feeling of separateness. The ‘Bhakta’ offers himself at God’s feet uttering Nama, Nama… and becomes devoid of all doubts and is satisfied. God then appears before him. But you may be forgetful and may not be able to do ‘Namaskar’ all the time. So, whilst chanting ‘Naam’ do ‘Namaskar’ also and, while doing ‘Namaskar’, chant ‘Naam’. He will not be able to stand away from you.
